Practical knowledge for the people who look after stone on board
These marble care guides for yachts are written for the people who live with natural stone every day at sea: chief stews and interior crew, captains, yacht managers, and the designers and studios who specify stone for new builds and refits. They share general technical knowledge, without jargon, so that the right decision can be taken at the right moment, whether that means a simple change of routine or a call to a specialist.
Marble, onyx and travertine bring warmth and depth to a yacht interior, but they are calcite stones: softer than granite, sensitive to acids, and exposed on board to salt, humidity, sand, cosmetics and constant use. Most damage we are asked to repair could have been reduced with a few good habits, a short list of approved products and a sensible calendar for heavier work.
Each guide stands on its own. The first two are for interior teams: how to react to an acid etch mark on a vanity or bar top, and how to organise stone care through a busy charter season, with checklists to use before and after each charter. The third is for captains and managers planning work around the yard period, pre-season preparation and turnarounds. The fourth explains how marble and onyx behave in a marine environment, from salt and condensation to hull movement, backlit onyx and lightweight backed panels. The fifth is a technical sheet for yacht designers and interior studios. The newest goes back to the interior team: which cleaning products and tools are safe on marble, which are not, and how to react when something spills.
The guides are general information. Every stone, finish and installation is different, and the yacht’s own care manual and the stone supplier’s instructions always come first. When in doubt, test on a hidden area, or send us photos before trying anything.
When the stone needs more than care, our service pages explain what can be done on board: polishing, repair of chips and cracks, etch mark and stain removal, protection and maintenance contracts. Interventions are carried out by Les Traitements du Sud, the stone-care company that looks after yachts on the Côte d’Azur, and we come to your yacht, wherever she is.
