Yacht marble restoration in Viareggio

Marble repair, polishing and protection on board, inside the Viareggio yards or alongside in the darsene.

Where many of the yachts we work on were born

Yacht marble restoration in Viareggio often means returning a yacht’s stone to the condition it left the same town in. Benetti has built here since 1873; Codecasa traces its origins to 1825; Perini Navi, now part of The Italian Sea Group, and Rossinavi have their yards here too. A great many Italian-built interiors, with their bookmatched marble bathrooms and onyx bars, were installed a few hundred metres from where they come back for warranty work and refits.

That gives Viareggio its own type of request. A yacht returns to her builder or to a refit yard after a few seasons, and the owner’s representative wants the stone to match the rest of the work: new paint, renewed joinery, upgraded systems. Our team travels to your yacht in Viareggio, inside the yard or alongside in one of the basins, and works within the yard’s organisation.

Where we work in Viareggio

  • Darsena Europa
  • Darsena Italia

The port lies at the mouth of the Burlamacca canal and is organised in basins, the darsene, each with its own use. Yards line the quays and the road towards the Molo Marinai d’Italia; local press counts dozens of them, employing close to a thousand people. Knowing which basin your yacht is in tells us how we reach her.

Darsena Italia and Darsena Lucca

These are the basins of the builders. Benetti’s Viareggio production is split between them, and the north-west quay of Darsena Italia also receives yachts in transit. A yacht here is usually inside a yard perimeter, so we board with the yard’s badges and under its safety rules.

Darsena Europa and the Madonnina

Darsena Europa and the Darsena della Madonnina are the main pleasure basins. The north and east quays of Darsena Europa are where visiting yachts are directed, and several berth operators there take yachts of 50 metres and more, with transit traffic in summer and large yachts wintering through the cold months. Access to the quays is easy by van, which makes Darsena Europa the simplest place for a visit between two programmes.

The refit yards

Lusben, the refit company of the Azimut|Benetti group, was founded in Viareggio in 1956 and has just installed a 720-tonne travel lift that lets its Viareggio yard haul yachts of up to 55 metres; its Livorno site, a short drive south, works on much larger vessels in a floating dock. Codecasa and Rossinavi also carry out refits alongside their new builds, and many specialised trades in the district work as subcontractors on board. Marble restoration slots into that system as one more trade: we agree the timing with the yard’s project manager and fit into the sequence of works.

Nearby: Porto di Pisa and La Spezia

Some yachts associated with the Viareggio yards lie elsewhere on this coast. Porto di Pisa, at Marina di Pisa by the mouth of the Arno, has around 350 berths for boats up to 50 metres and is about ten minutes by car from Pisa airport. To the north, the Gulf of La Spezia hosts superyacht yards and Porto Mirabello, a marina for large yachts. We can reach yachts in these places from Viareggio when the request comes through a yard or a manager we already work with.

And as everywhere: at anchor, if the sea and the tender allow; in a workshop near the yacht, for a piece that comes out easily. We come to your yacht, wherever she is.

The port entrance and the weather

Viareggio’s harbour mouth is sandy. Pilot guides warn of a sand bar that makes the entrance dangerous in heavy weather, and in the winter of 2023–2024 a series of storms narrowed the navigable channel to a fraction of its width, forcing emergency dredging; the region has since planned a permanent sand-pumping system. For a yacht, this can mean a delayed departure or arrival. For our planning, it means one thing: we stay flexible. If your yacht cannot leave the yard on the planned day, the stone work can often move forward into the extra days, rather than the other way round.

Our services in Viareggio

Marble repair. Refits are hard on stone. Chips on stair nosings and vanity edges, cracks in a slab after a structural job, a corner broken while removing joinery: we fill with tinted resin matched to the stone and rebuild edges in place.

Polishing. After the dusty trades, we hone and polish the floors, bathrooms and bar tops so that they come out of the yard with the same finish as the rest of the interior.

Crystallisation. For calcareous marble floors in lobbies and saloons, where a harder, brighter surface helps them through the next seasons.

Etch mark removal. Acid marks, limescale and rust, including the dull patches left by products used in the yard to remove paint, glue or overspray.

Protection. Water and oil repellent impregnation once the stone is clean and dry, applied before the yacht is handed back.

Maintenance contracts. For yachts that return to Viareggio every winter, a contract keeps a record of each surface and avoids starting again from zero.

Marble, onyx, travertine, granite and quartzite: the same methods, adapted to each stone. We do not work on teak, carpets or wood.

Working as one trade among many

A Viareggio refit brings together painters, joiners, upholsterers, electricians and systems engineers on the same deck. The yard project manager decides who works where and when. We fit into that plan: we ask for the stone areas to be handed over once sanding, painting and heavy joinery are finished, protect everything around them, extract dust at the source and use products suited to closed spaces.

At the end, the surfaces are checked with the yard and with the yacht’s chief stew or captain, and a short care note is left for the crew. If an NDA is needed, it is signed before the first visit.

Season and planning in Viareggio

Viareggio runs on the yard calendar more than the charter calendar.

October to March: the refit and lay-up season. Yachts come back from the summer and enter the yards for maintenance through the winter. This is the main period for restoration work in Viareggio, with time to treat a whole deck of bathrooms or a saloon floor while the yacht is out of service.

March: the industry meets here. YARE, the yachting aftersales and refit event, gathers yards, suppliers and yacht captains in Viareggio each March; the 2026 edition ran from 11 to 13 March. It is a good moment to discuss next winter’s work with the captain on the spot.

April to June: deliveries and departures. New builds are handed over and refitted yachts leave. The last days before departure are when final defects appear: a chip found at the snagging stage, a mark left by the final clean. A short visit settles them.

Summer. The basins of Darsena Europa receive yachts in transit, which can call for a quick intervention between two cruises along the Tuscan coast.

Surfaces, and how to get started

Our pages on marble bathrooms, floors, bars and tables and stairs explain what each surface needs. To prepare a request for a yacht in Viareggio, gather the following.

  • The basin and the yard, or the berth in Darsena Europa
  • The yard project manager’s contact, if the yacht is in refit
  • The refit schedule: when sanding and painting finish
  • Photos of each surface, close up and from further away
  • The date the yacht must leave the yard
  • The stone types, if known, from the builder’s documentation

Our method is described in detail on how we work on board. Managers following a refit will find our page for yacht managers useful, and the other Italian ports are on the Italy page.

Viareggio: frequent questions

Can you work inside a builder’s yard during warranty work or a refit?

Yes, with the yard’s permission. We follow its access, safety and scheduling rules, and coordinate with the project manager like any other subcontractor.

The yard broke a corner of a marble vanity while removing joinery. Must the slab be replaced?

Not necessarily. Many broken corners and chips can be rebuilt with resin tinted to the stone and polished flush. Photos let us tell you quickly whether a repair is realistic.

Our departure from Viareggio may be delayed by the conditions at the harbour mouth. Does that affect your work?

It usually helps. If the yacht stays longer, the stone work can be extended or brought forward; we adapt the slot to the actual departure date.

Our yacht is at Porto di Pisa or in La Spezia, not in Viareggio itself. Can you come?

Yes, both are within reach. Tell us where she lies and when, and we will organise the visit.

Can marble be treated during the snagging days just before delivery?

Yes, for limited defects. Larger work should be planned earlier in the refit, once the heavy trades have finished.

Do you have a workshop or office in Viareggio?

No. Our team travels to your yacht in Viareggio for each job, with its own equipment. There is no local address or phone line for now.

In Viareggio, interventions are carried out today by the travelling team of Les Traitements du Sud, the stone-care company that looks after yachts on the Côte d’Azur. Yacht names and faces are never published without consent.
