A southern coast where yachts stay longer
Yacht marble restoration in the Algarve serves a coast that yachts increasingly treat as a destination rather than a corner to round. Our team travels to your yacht in Vilamoura, in Portimão or in Lagos, and restores her marble, onyx and natural stone on board, alongside, on the hard or at anchor.
The Algarve has two traits that matter for stone. First, the climate: mild, dry winters mean that yachts stay here for months, in use, with owners flying in through Faro for long weekends. Marble that is lived on all year, rather than closed up under covers, wears steadily. Second, its position: this is the last stretch of mainland Europe before Madeira and the Canaries, and Lagos is described by sailors as the closest marina to both. Yachts preparing for the Atlantic stop here to provision, service and set the interior straight before a long passage.
Between those two rhythms, the requests we hear are clear: dull bathroom floors after a busy summer of beach days and sunscreen, etched bar tops after evenings on the aft deck, and stone to protect before an ocean crossing.
Where we work in the Algarve
The Algarve’s large-yacht activity is concentrated in three harbours along about seventy kilometres of coast. We travel between them as your yacht needs.
- Marina de Vilamoura
- Nova Marina Vilamoura
- Marina de Portimão
- Marina de Lagos
Marina de Vilamoura and Nova Marina
Marina de Vilamoura opened in 1974 as Portugal’s first marina and remains its largest, with some eight hundred and twenty-five berths for yachts of six to sixty metres, and a maximum draught of around four metres. It has repeatedly been named International Marina of the Year by The Yacht Harbour Association. In November 2024, during its fiftieth anniversary, the marina launched Nova Marina: three pontoons with sixty-eight berths reserved for yachts of twenty to forty metres, each berth with its own pump-out, remote-metered water and power, round-the-clock security and a concierge service. For us this means well-organised access, pontoons designed for larger yachts, and crews who are often staying long enough to schedule work properly.
Behind the basin, Vilamoura’s boatyard has a sixty-tonne travel hoist and hard standing for around two hundred boats. If your yacht is hauled out, we can work on board on the hard, and a removable vanity top or table can be treated in a workshop space close to the yacht.
Marina de Portimão and the Arade river
At the mouth of the Arade, beside Praia da Rocha, Marina de Portimão has around six hundred and twenty berths and takes yachts up to fifty metres with four metres of draught. It was the first marina in Portugal to hold the “Super Yacht Ready” certification, and an expansion announced in 2024 adds a fixed breakwater with berths for eighteen yachts up to forty-five metres. Across the river, on the left bank, its repair yard has heavy lifting capacity, including a crane rated for vessels up to three hundred tonnes. That makes Portimão the natural choice when marble work coincides with a haul-out or a maintenance period.
Marina de Lagos
Lagos sits in the town centre behind a lifting footbridge that opens on request, with shorter opening hours outside the summer months. The marina takes yachts up to about thirty metres, and the Sopromar yard is directly behind it. It is a favoured base for yachts preparing an Atlantic departure, and a pleasant place for a crew to spend a few days while work goes on.
Anchorages along the coast
In settled weather, yachts anchor off Ponta da Piedade near Lagos, inside the harbour walls at Portimão or upriver towards Ferragudo, and in the lagoon at Culatra in the Ria Formosa, where the entrance current is strong and deep-draught yachts take local advice. Sagres, at the western tip, offers shelter from northerlies. When the tender ride is reasonable, our team works at anchor too. We come to your yacht, wherever she is.

Tables that live outdoors
Algarve days are long and spent outside. Marble tables on the aft deck and flybridge take sun, salt, sunscreen and spilled drinks, and their surface loses its depth quickly.
We hone and polish them on board, protect the deck around them, and finish with an impregnation suited to an outdoor surface. The photo shows the kind of result we aim for; it illustrates our method, not a yacht in this port.
Marble services for yachts on the Algarve coast
What we propose depends on the stone and its condition, assessed from your photos and then on board. On this coast the work usually falls into these categories:
- Superyacht marble polishing, to bring back an even finish on floors and vanities after a season of heavy use.
- Crystallisation of calcareous marble floors that need a hard, bright surface for the next run of guests.
- Repair of chipped edges and step nosings, cracks and missing fragments, filled with tinted resin to match the stone.
- Removal of etch marks and stains: lemon and wine rings on bar tops, limescale in showers, rust marks from fittings.
- Protection with water- and oil-repellent impregnation, especially before an Atlantic crossing or a winter of continuous use.
- Maintenance contracts for yachts based in Vilamoura or Portimão through the year, with visits timed to the owner’s stays.
Onyx, travertine, granite and quartzite receive the same attention, each with the method its hardness and porosity require.
Planning around the Algarve calendar
The coast is busy in July and August, when Vilamoura, Albufeira and Portimão are full and guests are aboard most days. Marble work then has to be surgical: one bathroom while the family is at the beach, a bar top early in the morning.
Autumn brings the Atlantic departures. Westbound yachts leave Europe for the Caribbean around the end of November, and many make their last mainland call here before heading for Madeira or the Canaries. A few days before departure is the right time to protect stone and repair anything loose or chipped, because weeks offshore will find every weakness.
Winter is the Algarve’s particular strength. With mild temperatures and quieter marinas, it is the season for winter berthing, for refit work in the yards, and for owners who keep using their yacht. It is also our preferred window for full floors and staircases, when the interior can be given over to the work for several days.
In spring, yachts returning east from the Caribbean pass the coast on their way into the Mediterranean, and a stop in Vilamoura or Portimão is an opportunity to reset the interior before the European season. Our guide to protecting marble during the charter season covers the routine that keeps the result lasting.

- Which harbour: Vilamoura, Nova Marina, Portimão, Lagos, or at anchor
- Whether the yacht is afloat, hauled out or due to be lifted
- Dates the interior is free of guests
- Clear photos of each surface, close up and wide
- Any cleaning products recently used on the stone
- Planned departure date if an Atlantic crossing is coming
With that, we can tell you quickly what is feasible during your stay and how long the yacht will need to be available.
Algarve: local questions
Do you work at Nova Marina in Vilamoura as well as in the main basin?
Yes. Both are part of Marina de Vilamoura. We arrange access with the crew and marina security before the visit, and our portable equipment is carried along the pontoon.
Our yacht is hauled out at Portimão or Vilamoura. Can the marble be done on the hard?
It can, and a haul-out is often a good moment. We coordinate with the yard and any other trades on board, and work in the yacht or in a workshop space nearby for removable pieces.
We leave for Madeira or the Canaries in a week. What should be done first?
Priority goes to anything that could worsen at sea: chips on step edges, cracks, and unprotected bathrooms. Polishing that is purely cosmetic can wait for your return if time is short.
Is winter a good time for marble work in the Algarve?
It is the best one. Marinas are quieter, guests are fewer, and the mild weather makes it easy to ventilate the interior between steps.
Can you work at anchor off Lagos or in the Ria Formosa?
When the crew can provide a tender and the sea is calm, yes. At Culatra the lagoon entrance current is strong, so we plan transfers around slack water.
Is there a local team based in Vilamoura?
Not at present. Our team travels to your yacht in the Algarve from the Côte d’Azur, where Les Traitements du Sud cares for marble on yachts. There is no local address; you reach us on the same WhatsApp line for every port.
Today, every intervention is carried out by the travelling team of Les Traitements du Sud. You may also want our overview of Portugal or the Lisbon page if your yacht is heading north.
Works in Vilamoura are carried out by Les Traitements du Sud (France), travelling team.
